Video: In God’s Name, CBS Feature

Hey check it out, a sneak preview of a CBS documentary featuring religious leaders of all faiths. United Sikhs was involved in fashioning the Sikh aspects of the video, which include an interview with the jathedar of the Akal Takhat, Singh Sahib Giani Joginder Singh.

IN GOD’S NAME, a CBS primetime special produced in association with the acclaimed French filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet (”9/11″), will explore the complex questions of our time through the intimate thoughts and beliefs of 12 of the world’s most influential spiritual leaders. It will be broadcast Sunday, Dec. 23 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT).

The UK Television Program “Desi DNA” recently featured a deep-dive on Gatka, the Sikh Martial art. Gatka combines spirituality with discipline and melds strength with wisdom. It is one of the reasons I love Sikhi–you’re supposed to be both mentally and physically strong, and use that strength to help people. The clip features The Baba Fateh Singh Gatka Akhara, a group I had the opportunity to train with in September 2005 at the West Coast Sikh Youth Alliance Summer Camp. I have a distinct memory of grappling with a fellow trainee while tumbling down a steep hill in driving rain and the pain of getting punched in the abs and face repeatedly, while being totally covered in mud. And I am stronger for it. I warn you though, the beginning of the video is a little silly.

Many great quotes from the video, for example:
“You’ve got the spirit of a warrior, and the soul of a saint.” - Tejji Bhaaji

Video: Meet the Sikhs

Another good “Sikh Awareness” video that was recently approved as supplemental material for all California Public Schools.

“Meet the Sikhs” is a short video, produced in 2005 by the Public Broadcasting station KVIE (TV Channels 6 & 7, Sacramento). It was telecast by the KVIE numerous times. After a successful Legal and Social review in 2006, the video was included in the list of approved Supplemental Instructional Materials for California’s Public Schools. Dr. David Hosley, the General Manager of the KVIE, kindly agreed that the video may be used for educational purposes free of charge.

Popstars Singh

Funny video that you’ve probably seen a few times already, but I archive it here for your enjoyment.

  • Video: Sikh FBI Agent

Yup, Sikhs are FBI agents too!

Beyond a detailed commentary on Guru Nanak’s life, this 20-minute video has concurrent subtitles in 13 languages! Impressive!

  • Preeti Kaur forwarded me this cool video that documents some visitors to the Harmandar Sahib, or “Golden Temple” complex. It’s like the Vatican for Sikhs. (As an aside, the most sacred temple for Sikhs is one’s own mind.) The cool part of this video is that they participate in making langar — the free community meal served to all, 24/7. Click through the video to YouTube and read the video comments and description.

“Ba Ba Black Sheep” in Raag

Sikhs are required to be expert musicians, because the hymns in our sacred text are set to Raags–musical scales. The following video is evidence of this fact.

  • Video: What it means to be a Sikh

I’m staying with some British friends in San Francisco, and they pointed me to this hilarious clip from Goodness Gracious Me. The video reminds all of us that there’s more to being a Sikh than just sporting the outward identity. :) What are your thoughts?

Awesome little video on Kabaddi in California. I had no idea you could be a Pro Kabaddi player in Canada. For those that don’t know, Kabaddi is an age-old Punjabi game that requires strength, speed, and tenacity. The last time I played Kabaddi was at the fabled Lohgarh Retreat Sikh Youth Camp in 2003.
