There’s nothing better than scientifically defensible evidence when making a case. The Harvard Law School graduates at Ensaaf know this well, so they teamed up with Benetech’s HRDAG (Human Rights Data Analysis Group) to produce some academically sound findings regarding mass disappearances and extrajudicial executions in Punjab. Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? Most would agree that it’s a great film. But it’s especially great because it touches on torture as a commonplace technique used by the Indian police. (Remember when Jamal was being electrocuted?) This report takes it beyond movie references and produces some cold, hard numbers about the gravity of this problem and how justice has not been served to the countless innocent victims.

Here’s a link to the full press release and report as well. If India is such a great state it will work with human rights activists to expose these atrocities and punish those involved.

According to this Washington Times Article, Rajwant Singh represented the Sikh community as part of Obama’s National Prayer Service at the Washington Cathedral. If you have any photos of this event, do post them in the comments. So I don’t know if Obama actually met with Rajwant Singh, but Obama definitely saw him, as he showed up early to get front row seats to the event.

The omission nettled Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education to the point that he contacted Mr. Dubois, asking for tickets to the service.

Wearing a bright yellow turban, Mr. Singh showed up at the cathedral at 6:20 a.m. to be sure to get a seat on the front row in the north transcept facing the new president.

“We have a lot of work to do to educate our leaders,” he said. “Obama mentioned Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and non-believers in his inaugural speech but not Sikhs. And we are the world’s fifth-largest religion.”

I’m glad that Rajwant Singh had the contacts and the foresight to be able to get in on this event. There’s no one person that can represent the Sikh viewpoint to Obama, just as there is no one Christian, Jew, or Hindu (well, in the Christian case, perhaps the Pope?) — but it’s good to know that Rajwant Singh is out there — willing to wake up early and get a front row seat at high profile Washington events. Thank you Rajwant!

This is really exciting news. The MSA has partnered with NYU Sikhs to organize a workshop where Sikh professionals can advise Sikh students considering various careers. Cool stuff — this sort of thing shows we’re really coming of age as a community. I hope this inspires more interaction of this sort. As a side note, several Sikhs I know have tried to start the Sikh Entrepreneurs Network — or some sort of Sikh Angel or VC Fund… Can somebody please organize that?

Some dedicated readers may remember that in February 2007, I wrote to the Pew Forum regarding the omission of Sikhs in the Religious Landscape Survey. Well, they have finally replied to my query. I’ve posted the reply below. Thank you to Ms. Loralei Coyle for responding:

Good Afternoon Savraj,

I am writing in response to your query that you sent to the Pew Forum. Thank you for contacting us.

I wanted to let you know that respondents did have the opportunity to volunteer their religion as “Sikh,” and that several respondents did exactly that. In total, however, we found that fewer than three-tenths of 1% of our sample described themselves as Sikhs (which is not inconsistent with the DOJ estimate you cite), which means that we had too few to analyze them as a separate group. Sikhs are included in the “other world religions” category in the RLS reports.

So today’s question to readers is — are Sikhs really that few and far between that they don’t fall in to the scope of an American Religious Landscape Survey? Or do we have significant numbers as Sikhs, and we’re just not on the Pew Forum’s Survey mailing list? You decide. At any rate, I hope the Pew Forum will contact me for the next survey! So right after the election, I attended a screening of Divided We Fall at the Princeton Theological Seminary. I’ve attached a short slideshow of photos from the event. Needless to say it was a great movie, and many thanks to all the groups and organizations involved. One of the most profound quotes from the movie, for me, was “evil wins when good people do nothing.”

The director of multicultural relations, Rev. Victor Aloyo Jr, sent out the following quotes in a post-event email:

“Very emotional and inspirational documentary. It makes one realize how important it is to create awareness and eliminate the ignorance there still is over here.” Hindu-Sikh from Kenya

Since the event, many seminarians have volunteered to visit the local Sikh Sabha Gurdwara, and much awareness and goodwill has been created.

Available to Sikh high school seniors in NY, NJ, CT, and PA, this $2,500 scholarship program has an application deadline in March of 2009. You can read more details below or check out the website at sikhyouthscholarship.org.

The Sikh Youth Scholarship began with the small idea that excellence lies in education. A small group of Sikh youths decided to embark on a journey that would help our future generation retain their Sikhi while achieving educational merit. The whole logic behind the Scholarship Fund began in a small discussion of how Sikhism can be recognized and retained in our current society. The answer was simple: education. Through education, students are able to develop into significant, hard-working members of this world; and if those students represent the Sikh faith by retaining their full identity, they will allow it to flourish without demise.

This Sikh Youth Scholarship is open to students who are aspiring Gursikhs located in the tri-state area (NJ, NY, CT, PA). They must currently be high school seniors that plan to attend a four year college/university and have maintained at least a 3.00 GPA during high school. Completed applications (obtained from www.sikhyouthscholarship.org) should be submitted along with an official copy of their transcript by March 2nd, 2009. The judging committee will choose a small group of finalists, who will be interviewed for the selection of the winners. Two scholarships worth $2,500 each will be awarded!

I’m actually a bit surprised that the film didn’t go for national release, by having someone like Lionsgate Films pick it up. At any rate, it’s a great film and you should grab a copy!
