I’ve seen the Sojhi Curriculum and I know the people that put it together. It’s great and I hope every gurudwara in the US can pick up a copy of it. I’ve updated this post with more info — I had previously spelled the title incorrectly as “Sohji.”

Sikh Research Institute Creates Important Educational Resource for the Sikh Community

New York, New York (July 12, 2007) — The Sikh Coalition urges the community to pay special attention to Sikh education efforts. Gurmat and Pañjabi schools have become the primary method of imparting the Sikh spirit, ideology, values, and history to the youth. In an effort to help children go beyond looking and acting like a Sikh to thinking like one, the Sikh Research Institute initiated Sojhi – Gurmat and Pañjabi Education Resource. The Sikh Coalition endorses Sojhi curriculum’s content and instruction material.

The goal of Sojhi is to improve the effectiveness of Sikh education by developing high standards of learning with comprehensive teaching materials. In the Pañjabi language, Sojhi means ‘insight’. The Curriculum is oriented around the goal of developing insights to inspire a Guru-centered life. Utilizing the expertise of a team of educators, activists and Sikhi experts, the project completed an elementary school curriculum package for Gurmat and Pañjabi Schools in June 2006. The Curriculum contains over 300 lesson plans, classroom management tips for teachers, and recommendations on administration of Gurmat and Pañjabi Schools across the globe.

Sojhi has trained over 150 teachers to date at fourteen of the twenty-two schools which are currently implementing the Sojhi elementary school curriculum for students in Kindergarten to Grade 5. Teacher trainings are conducted in content understanding and teaching techniques. This summer, Sojhi will also be releasing their Middle School Curriculum for students in Grade 6 to Grade 8 and other supplemental resources for use at home and at Gurmat and Pañjabi schools.

A standardized curriculum that can be used across North America will be extremely beneficial to all Sikhs. We at the Sikh Coalition highly recommend that you purchase the elementary school curriculum at your Gurmat and Pañjabi schools or for individual home schooling.
